But equipped with the right StarCraft 2 strategy, even the newest of players can make their way up the ranks to Diamond league or even higher. 9 Pylon 12 Gateway Opening

Protoss Gateway

The 9 Pylon 12 Gateway opening build is one of the strongest and most frequently used openings for the Protoss. While it ensures a strong economy, it is also resilient to rushes and extremely early pressure (as opposed to the 9 Pylon 13 Gateway which is much riskier). This opening is extremely versatile and can transition into nearly all Protoss builds.

There are two variants to the 9 Pylon 12 Gateway opening:

Fast Gas:

9 Pylon
10 Chrono Boost Nexus
12 Gateway
13 Assimilator / Chrono Boost Nexus
16 Pylon

Slow Gas:

9 Pylon
10 Chrono Boost Nexus
12 Gateway / Chrono Boost Nexus
14 Assimilator
16 Pylon

What do these numbers mean?

Tips:

  • Make sure to only Chrono Boost the Nexus when you have available supply.
  • Standard play is to scout at 12 with your probe after warping in the Gateway.
  • Although the differences between mineral and gas collection between the two variants are nearly negligible, each variant can potentially shave off a few seconds of your desired build for timing attacks.

Almost all build orders are a rough estimation and can usually be adapted depending on your enemy’s actions. ALWAYS scout your opponent and adjust your build accordingly.
